This weekend we had a great visit with Brad’s sister, brother-in-law and two adorable girls. We always love when people come to visit from out of town because it is a great excuse to do something super touristy! On Friday we made our way to Lancaster, PA where we spent some time learning about the lives of Amish people, shopping for handmade crafts and enjoying all the delicious food. It’s been about 15 years since I had been to the area with my family and I couldn’t really remember much except the amazing family style restaurant we had gone to (and not being able to get enough fresh bread and apple butter).
A majority of the day was spent at the Landis Valley Museum. The museum is actually a little village and farm where you get to see and experience 18th and 19th century village and farm life in Lancaster County, PA. We toured the Landis House, the tavern, the gunsmith, the schoolhouse and lots of other buildings. However, the highlight was definitely the Federal Barn! Here we saw a couple of Clydesdale hourses, they were the biggest horses I’ve even seen! We were also followed around by a very friendly turkey.
We also stopped in the nearby Oregon Dairy Country Restaurant & Buffet for lunch which was awesome! We all ate far too much food at the buffet followed by homemade ice cream of course and then went to play at the playground next door. Everything was delicious and the playground was a lot of fun!
We finished off the day Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market where we picked up some delicious corn for dinner and sampled some yummy cheeses, breads and other snacks. This place is not to be missed on any trip to Amish Country.
Overall, it was a great day with great company. I can’t wait until we go visit the rest of the Williams clan in Virginia this weekend!
